Weekly Wrap-Up -> Mar. 18-22

We are back from March Break and welcomed spring with lots of fun provocations and activities!

What do you wonder about spring?
At our Science and Discovery Centre, we set out a few plants, flowers and bulbs asking what the students wonder about spring.  We noticed that they were very interested in drawing and painting the flowers too!

Spring Playdough Cookie Cutters
I found cute spring playdough cookie cutters (rainbow, rabbit, egg, flower) at the Walmart in Buffalo last week when I went and thought they would be perfect to set out this week!  
As the week went on, we added various colours of playdough.  Next week we plan on adding to this centre by setting up small plastic flowers, bugs and birds.

How many bugs can you pick up?
I love leaving out activities that focus on fine motor so I placed a bunch of plastic bugs (you can find these at Dollarama or Michaels) along with tweezers and a 30-second timer.  Students try to pick up as many bugs as possible before the time runs out!


Spring Loose Parts Story
We added a bunch of loose parts to this provocation (plastic flowers, birds, fairies, etc.) and invited students to think of a story about spring.


Our Giving Tree
Each year at the start of Lent, we read the story The Giving Tree.  We discuss how Lent is the perfect time to show others how we can be helpful, kind, respectful and caring.  Each time a student does something for someone else (i.e. helping a friend open their snack), that student can write/draw on a leaf and we tape them to our classroom giving tree (on the door).  I have been doing this activity for years and love it!

Water Beads - Sensory Bin
In our sensory bin, I added water beads in spring colours (you can find these at Dollar Tree in the floral section) along with bottles, scoops, bowls and spoons.  This is a great activity to document students' thinking about capacity!


Sneaky Snake
Sneaky Snake is a great game to work on subitizing!  Students roll the dot die and pick up that piece of the snake.  They continue rolling and building their snake until they have both a head (piece #1) and a tail (piece #2).  The person with the longest snake wins!
*I printed the pieces on transparency to use at the light table but you can also use this game at a table*

How tall can you build a tower?
We noticed our students building towers on the carpet quite a bit before March Break so we set up this provocation.

Space Centre Dramatic Play
Our Space Inquiry wrapped up just before March Break.  We decided to hang the paper mache planets the students made in our Dramatic Centre.  We also left out lots of tin foil, boxes and the telescope.  The students loved turning our Dramatic Centre into a Space Centre this week!


3-D Figures
We started our 3-D figures unit in math this week.  I like to start this unit by reading the book 3-D Shapes and discussing that they are fat not flat.  Students always laugh when we say that!
We also co-create this chart throughout the week as we learn more about these figures.



We worked in small groups with this challenge:  Can you build it?  Yes or no.

I also left out this fun Q-tip alphabet dot painting activity to work on both fine motor skills and letter/sound identification.
