Weekly Plans - Week 22 (Feb. 12-16)

This is going to be (yet another!) busy week ahead! We have our Book Fair, Shrove/Pancake Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day all within a few days of each other!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

Our poem is super fun this week - with a focus on pancakes!
After learning it, students will partner up and get 1 bean bag (or "pancake"). As we chant the poem and say the words "toss a pancake", one partner will throw the "pancake" to their partner who will try and catch it! Then they switch! It's a lot of fun!
This squishy pancake was gifted to me by Ms. B. a few years ago and I always use it with the DECE I work with to show students an example of how to play.

We are getting ready for Lent in our classroom. We will start on Tuesday by discussing what Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday) is. On Wednesday, before we head to the Ash Wednesday liturgy, we will learn why we receive ashes on our heads and also start our Lenten chain.
Each day we will tear off a strip from the chain and read the activity.
Each week we will be focusing on lessons and activities from my Lent & Holy Week pack if you wish to follow along!

Students can use the spatula to flip over a pancake, read the sight word and record it on the worksheet!
This activity can be found in my Flip a Pancake game.

We learned about Lunar New Year last week. So we decided to leave out some materials for students to create their own dragon (as it's also the year of the dragon!).

Can you write a Chinese zodiac animal word on the Buddha board?

With Valentine's Day also this week, one student donated this fun Bingo game so we set it up for students to play together!

We are wrapping up our Arctic Inquiry.
Students have been researching an animal and drawing it for our class mural in the hallway.
We also learned about northern Canada (which is part of the Arctic circle!) and all of the things the Inuit invented (and how to say the words in that language)!

At our Game Centre this week, we left out this large felt heart tic-tac-toe. I found it a few weeks ago from Dollarama.

Students can make their own Valentine's Day cards or books!
We added this word poster from my Writing Center Posters pack.

We turned our Small World Play Centre into Valentine World!

I added a few Valentine's Day loose parts, along with these colourful stir sticks, to the light table.
Can you design a picture?

We had a lot of fun learning about fair shares and introducing students to the word "remainder" last week. At our Math Centre I added these fair share cards to solve!

At our Pocket Chart Centre, students can build simple CVC words with the letters/sounds we have introduced so far.

This week (and next week) our focus in math is spatial relationships.
I think this is one of my favourite units to teach!!! There are so many hands-on activities included in this pack!
We will start the week by learning about tangrams - always a favourite puzzle to solve!
We read the story Grandfather Tang's Story to learn about how tangrams can turn into different animals!
I like offering students the opportunity to create their own animal using the tangrams also!

We will also be focusing on positional words.

You can find all of the above, along with 2-weeks of detailed lesson plans (and hands-on, follow-up activities/centres) in my Spatial Relationships in Kindergarten pack.

Weekly Plans - Week 21 (Feb. 5-9)

It's February!
This month has so many fun celebrations - Valentine's Day, Carnival/Carnevale, Lunar New Year, Shrove Tuesday/Ash Wednesday and our grade 1 friends are celebrating the 100th day of school!
Oh, and the Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving in the next few weeks also!!!

Here's a look at our centres this week:

Our poem this week is called I Like Hearts.
I set up this retell centre at the Felt Board.

We will also be making Valentine's Day cards to give to our families!
They are very simple - we will use our fingerprints to decorate around the heart!

Our Arctic Inquiry is still going very strong! Students are continuing to research their animal and use the overhead to draw it. We will be adding these to our large mural in the hallway.
We set out clay and paper plates for students to create an Arctic scene or animal.

We will also be going on a virtual field trip to the Arctic!

How can you count? We left out loose parts perfect for Valentine's Day along with tweezers and heart ice cube trays.

A few years ago a student donated this game to the class - it's called Mental Blox and it's so popular!

I found these Valentine tic-tac-toe games at Dollarama a few years ago. We left them out at the light table.

Students can work together to make a large heart! They can use the cut up tissue paper squares to roll and glue on.

We will be working on our Valentine's Day bags! Students can write their name and decorate it however they would like. Next week all of their cards will go inside!

At our Games Centre, we put out Pop'N'Drop Penguins, another fun game that was donated a few years ago.

We've been working a lot on ways to make a number so I left out these "Making 5" and "Making 10" mats from my Decomposing Numbers in Kindergarten pack at our Math Centre.

This week our focus in math is on Fair Share (and a simple introduction to fractions!). The Minister of Education spoke about a revamp of the FDK Program just over a week ago and mentioned now teaching fractions. We already do! It's part of this fun unit and laid out in such a simple and easy manner - all hands-on and play-based!

Here are a few of our lessons/activities/centres for this week!

What does it mean to share fairly? We will be introducing the words even and odd by using cookies!
In our math intervention small group we will use this game to reinforce the concept of fair share.

What does equal mean? Using Unifix cubes, students will show an equal amount.

What is a fraction? We will be learning about half/halves!
I like having students use a Popsicle stick to show where half is.

The story The Doorbell Rang is perfect for teaching fractions!
We will be learning what the word remainder means.

All of the above activities/lessons/centres, as well as a complete 1-week detailed plans, come from my Fair Share (An Introduction to Fractions) Kindergarten Math Unit in my TpT store.

I also have this available as a digital (Google Slides) download!

Here are my weekly plans if you'd like to download!
