Weekly Plans - Week 28 (Apr. 1-5)

I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter long weekend! Can you believe it's already April?

I know it doesn't really feel like spring yet but the weather is set to warm up later this week so I will take that!

This is a short week coming up so we didn't switch up that many of our centres as last week was also short.

Here's a look at our centres this week:

We turned our Dramatic Play Centre into a Bakery! Students have been "baking" a lot while playing in here over the past few weeks and our lunch time supervisor donated a play coffee machine so we knew this centre would be a hit!

A parent gifted our class us these beautiful tulips so we decided to leave them out at our Science and Discovery Centre for students to look closely and paint.

At our Sensory Bin we tinted water green and added plastic mini eggs and egg cups along with a variety of scooping tools.

What can you build using 3D figures?

Pick a card and build it! This game is called Match Madness.

Can you design a spring picture using the geoboards?

We explored 3D figures over the past two weeks and introduced this game to the students - Can you build it? They really enjoyed it so we added it to our Math Centre.

This week (and next) our focus in math will be on addition.

Here are a few of the activities/lessons that we will be doing:

I like using these addition mats to show students how two separate numbers come together to make a larger number. They drag all of the pom-poms to the larger box on the bottom and count to get their answer.

Weekly Plans - Week 26 (Mar. 18-22)

We are back from our March Break trip to Mexico and I'm not going to lie...after a week away in the sun doing just about nothing but snorkeling and sun tanning, this week may be a little rough! HA! Good thing we planned some quick and easy centres before we left to help everyone (educators included!) with the transition back to school.

We will be welcoming spring on Tuesday this week so we set out a bunch of activities!

I'm going to be reading the students the story Mouse's First Spring on Monday (see my plans below) and then they can retell the story on the felt board. I made these cut out pieces from felt years ago (it's not that hard to do, just takes some time).

Can you tell a spring story?

We also set out spring cookie cutters at our Playdough Centre.

Here's a look at our centres this week:

Our sensory bin is filled with Easter grass, plastic eggs, loose parts and tongs (shaped like bunny ears).

We made our own teeter totters by using blocks and Popsicle sticks. 

Can you balance the objects? It's actually a little harder than it looks!

We will be exploring magnets at the Science and Discovery Centre for the next few weeks!

This is a game we found on Temu - roll and knock over the number.

At the Light Table we set out another game - Sneaky Snake!

Roll the die and build a snake - who has the longest snake?

You can find this in my "Fun with Dice" pack on TpT (I printed the pieces on transparency paper to use at the Light Table but you can print on regular paper and play at a table top too!)

Can you stamp the beginning, middle, or end of the word?

I saw this activity on Twitter (I can't remember who posted it!) and thought it was so much fun!

Use the turkey baster to blow a cotton ball into the box!

A great game to strengthen fine motor skills!

In math we will be starting our unit on 3D Figures.

We will be going on a "3D Figures Shape Hunt" around the classroom, down the hall and even outside!

This is the game "What's in my Bag?". We play this several times during the next two weeks to practice identifying and describing 3D figures.

I store all of my math units in Ziploc bags in my closet. It's super quick to pull out the bag and everything I need is ready to go!

March 2022

It's already March!  Even though it may be a short month, we pack a lot of fun into it!

February 28-March 4, 2022

This coming week is the start of Lent. Working in a Catholic school, this is one of our favourite times of the year!

Here's what we are doing to get ready:

Our Lenten Chain

Beginning on Wednesday, we will take off one ring from our Lenten chain (this is just a glimpse of the chain, it's over 20 chains long and hangs from our ceiling).  Students will try and do that challenge for the day (some examples include read to a friend, write a thank you card to the office staff, etc.)

We will also be reading about Lent and colouring in a booklet to take home and discuss further.

Pancake Tuesday

Here's our fun little poem that we will be reciting this week.

Breakfast Cafe Dramatic Centre

We put this dramatic centre out every year at the time and it's probably one of my students' favourites!

The small pieces are Melissa and Doug sets but you can easily make your own out of felt or construction paper.

In math, we are continuing with our unit on spatial relationships.

This week we will be learning about positional words (up, down, beside, etc.) and following simple instructions/directions.

Listen and draw - listen to the oral instructions and draw what you hear!

Here is one of our provocations all about spatial relationships - can you fill the tray with pentominoes?

We also set up our Osmo with the tangram challenge (it was very tricky!).

This week our focus in literacy is on writing stories. We set up this small world play provocation to encourage story telling.

We are also learning to identify the characters, setting, problem and solution in stories and thinking of our own!

March 7-11, 2022

It's our last week before March Break! We are going to be learning about ordinal numbers in math, continuing with our story writing workshop in language, and, of course, we have some fun provocations!

Ordinal numbers is a fun and easy math unit you can cover any time of the year!

We will start by lining up 5 (or 10) objects and learning how to identify positions by using the words "first, second, ...."

I also like this game where we choose a card, identify the position and mark it using a cube.

We will also be trying this challenging activity - listen and colour the correct spot!

I'm going to be setting this activity up at a table top.  Choose a card and follow the directions to build a sandwich.

To wrap up our week, we will be exploring numbers to 30 (a little challenging!) using a calendar.

I like to project this calendar on my interactive whiteboard and have students choose a card and draw that item in the correct spot.

Perseverance

Our virtue of the month in religion is perseverance.  It's always a tricky on with kindergarten students!

We will start by reading a teacher big book that I wrote all about perseverance.

Then we will work on a sorting activity.

I got these wooden stacking blocks years ago at Target.

What space stories can you tell?

(Our space inquiry is still very popular!)

We played "Find It - St. Patrick's Day" many times this week!

We are continuing with story writing this week.  One of my favourite apps to use each year is called "My Story".  It's free (a little limited but the students love it).  First we "write" out our stories then we make them on the app.

March 21-25, 2022

We just finished March Break and are heading back to the classroom.  My family spent the week in NYC (and visited Philadelphia on the way home).  It was just the getaway that we needed!

Here's what is coming up week...(stay tuned for more pics - we got back late last night and today was a day full of laundry! LOL)

March 28-April 1, 2022

This week we will be continuing with our 3D figures unit in math.

Here is one of my favourite games!  Hand out a small 3D figure to each student and then sing this song.

What can you build?

I got these foam 3D figures years back from Scholastic Canada.

We have a book called "Can you build it?" with pictures of famous landmarks from around the world as inspiration.

My SK (Year 2) students will be working on riddle booklets.

Choose a 3D figure, write a clue and an example and see if your friend can guess what it is!

We will be reading various wordless stories this week and students will have the opportunity to create their own!
